Dr. Alfred Adewale Martins nursed the idea of establishing a University. It is worthy of note that the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos has since 1973 promoted educational development in its territory. decision was taken to establish Augustine University. A decision informed by the belief of the Proprietor that higher education plays a crucial role in our modern world since it is a key source of ideas and innovation. It is equally in recognition of this fact and the need to expand access to higher education in the country that the Federal Government of Nigeria granted permission to corporate bodies and organizations to establish private Universities provided these meet the required criteria.

This necessitated the Visioner to set up a planning and implementation committee under the chairmanship of a retired Professor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Joseph O. Obemeata. Members of the Committee were to 'midwife' the setting up of a world class institution of higher learning that will attract and prepare intelligent and talented young men and women from diverse background within Nigeria and beyond, for all-round training and development.
