The Federal University Otuoke (FUO) is one of the Federal Universities established by the Federal Government of Nigeria in February 2011 in cognisance of the need to bridge the great divide between the educationally advantaged and disadvantaged sections of the country, especially areas where universities were lacking. Cited in the serene and secure Otuoke Community, at the heart of the oil-rich Niger-Delta region of Bayelsa State, the University which is 21 kilometres south of the state capital Yenagoa, occupies an expanse of 200 hectares (494 acres).

Professor Ohakwe has also presented some papers in local and international conferences. Prof.Ohakwe Johnson is a member of Nigerian Statistical Association (NSA), International Research and Development Institute (IRDI) and European Centre for Research, Training and Development, United Kingdom.
He is member of the Nigeria Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Member, Nigerian Institute Of Food Science And Technology (NIFST), Member, Association of Physicians of Complementary and Alternative Medicine, Member, International Research and Development Institute. (IRDI), Member Chemical Society of Nigeria (CSN), Member, Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM), As a prolific writer, Dr. Joel Theophilus Johnson has published profusely with well over 50 articles in both national and international journals of high repute.
He has worked in multicultural societies and among people with diverse backgrounds such as during a one-year TWAS-DBT postgraduate fellowship at Savitribai Phule Pune University, India and at Nelson Mandela University, South Africa. He is a member of a number of international scientific organizations and also a reviewer to some internationally peer-reviewed high-impact journals of Chemistry. He is the Faculty Advisor of the student chapter of the American Chemical Society at Federal University Otuoke. His strong desire is to be a mentor and inspiration to a new crop of chaps who will be leaders of tomorrow in their chosen professions.
