Admission

Undergraduate Admission Requirement

Below you will find a list of different qualifications and typical grade requirements. You must check the specific programme page for the exact requirements.

  • We don’t make offers based on UCAS points but on the actual qualifications you are taking. However, it is still important to list all of your qualifications as we take a holistic approach to assessing applications.
  • In some cases, you may be taking a combination of qualifications such as two A-levels and one BTEC Level 3 or one A-level and a Cambridge Pre-U. We welcome suitable combinations. If you are unsure about your qualifications, please contact the Admissions team who will be happy to give you further information. You can also view Admissions Policy and Procedures (PDF) for more information.

If your programme has GCSE requirements, you can find information about equivalent qualifications in the 'UK and International level 2 qualifications' section. For equivalents to A-levels, please view the 'UK and International level 3 qualifications' section.

Postgraduate Admission Requirments

You will need:

  • to meet our fitness to train requirements
  • a GCSE Grade C/4 or above (or recognized equivalents) in English (Language or Literature), Mathematics, and a science subject (including Combined Science).
  • an undergraduate honors degree, usually a 2:2 or above, from a university in the United Kingdom (or recognized equivalent).
  • an undergraduate honors degree, usually 2:2 or above, from a university in the United Kingdom. Ideally, your degree would be related to your chosen programme, or you would have studied the subject as part of your degree.

If English isn’t your first language, you will need to meet our English language requirements to study with us. These are listed on our programme pages. Your English language qualifications should be less than two years old at the time you start your studies with us.

Usually, we ask for IELTS because it shows us which areas of your English might need to be improved. However, we also accept a range of other English language qualifications.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS:

As well as UK qualifications, we accept many equivalent overseas qualifications. To check to see if your qualifications are of an equivalent standard to the UK academic entry requirements for the PGCE programme we recommend that you contact UK ENIC.

Once we receive your PGCE application from UCAS Teacher Training, if any of your qualifications are unclear then we will automatically contact you by email for further information.

If English isn’t your first language, you will need an IELTS score (or equivalent English language qualification) of 6.5 with a 6.5 in writing and no element lower than 6.0 to study this programme. If you need assistance with your English language, we offer a range of courses that can help prepare you for postgraduate-level study.

If you do not have a first degree awarded by a generally recognized institution in the UK, please note that the award of the PGCE and QTS does not in itself confer graduate status for the purposes of salary. Salaries in such cases are determined by employing authorities and not by the College or by the relevant government department.

How To Apply For Admission

UNDERGRADUATE:

Applying through UCAS: UCAS is the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service. It provides an impartial service that enables you to apply to universities, performing arts colleges, and conservatoires in the UK.

  • You apply by filling out a form at ucas.com. The form allows you to apply to a maximum of five institutions. The good news is that you only complete the form once and it will be sent to all the universities you’ve selected.
  • The form is broken down into different sections covering your contact information, academic history, and a personal statement that enables you to outline your passion and enthusiasm for the subject you want to study. Read our guidance on creating a personal statement that stands out.
  • Your application also needs to include a reference from someone who knows you well and can talk about your suitability for the subject you want to study, such as a teacher at school or college. You will need to pay a fee to UCAS to submit your application.

POSTGRADUATE:

  • You apply directly to Goldsmiths via the website by clicking the ‘apply now’ button on the programme page of the course you’re interested in.
  • Exceptions to this are our PGCE programmes where you are required to apply through UCAS Teacher Training, and our MA in Social Work where you must also apply through UCAS.
  • Some programmes have particular application procedures, so always check the relevant programme page first.
  • Personal Statement: As part of your application, you will be asked to upload a personal statement. This is your chance to differentiate yourself from the other applicants applying for your programme, and to describe why we should offer you a place to study with us.

History

In 1792 the Counter Hill Academy opened its doors in New Cross, in a house built by Deptford distiller, William Goodhew. The Royal Naval School then bought the site, building what is now our Richard Hoggart Building in 1843.

The Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths acquired the school and reopened it in 1891 as The Goldsmiths’ Company’s Technical and Recreative Institute. With the dawn of the twentieth century, the Company handed over the Institute to the University of London. It was re-christened Goldsmiths College and the modern era of Goldsmiths had begun.

838. After the Academy closed, the Royal Naval School bought the site. Over the next five decades they provided an education to the sons of officers in the Royal Navy and Royal Marines.

The Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths, one of the most powerful of London’s ‘City Livery Companies’, purchased the site and buildings after the Naval School moved out in 1889. Two years later, The Goldsmiths’ Company’s Technical and Recreative Institute opened.

For 13 years, the Company ran a hugely successful operation. At its peak over 7,000 male and female students were enrolled, drawn from the ‘industrial and working classes’ of the New Cross area.
