Igbinedion University, Okada is a privately owned university located in Okada, the headquarters of Ovia North-East Local Government Area in Edo State, Nigeria. Established on 10 May 1999 by Sir Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion CFR, IUO holds the distinction of being the first licensed private university in Nigeria.

Undergraduate Admission Requirement

General Entry Requirements

  • To be eligible for admission into the four-year disciplines and five or six-year professional programmes, candidates must possess a minimum of five credits at the GCE/WAEC, SSCE/NECO, or SSCE/NABTEB certificate examinations, which must include English Language and Mathematics at not more than two sittings.
    In addition, candidates seeking admission into Law must possess at least a credit pass in Literature in English. Candidates awaiting GCE/NECO SSCE/WAEC SSCE/NABTEB results are also encouraged to apply provided the results would be available by September, when the new session commences.
  • Candidates may also seek admission into the 200 level of the degree programmes (except Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, Medical Laboratory Sciences and Law) with the following qualifications:
  1. Passes in at least two subjects at the Advanced level and an additional subject at the subsidiary level in the General Certificate of Education Examination.The subjects must constitute a suitable preliminary to the intended courses.
  2. Diploma/NCE at credit level pass and above in the appropriate subjects from a recognized institution.
  3. IJMB in the appropriate subjects.
  4. First Degree in relevant discipline.
  5. In all these cases, candidates must also satisfy the requirements for matriculation viz: five credit passes at the GCE/WAEC SSCE/NECO SSCE/NABTEB Certificate examinations.

UTME Requirement

  • Candidates applying for admission are required to sit for UTME and obtain the prescribed cut-off marks. This is a statutory requirement for entry into Nigerian universities

Transfer Students

  • In addition, for students seeking transfer from another institution to Igbinedion University, Okada, an official copy of Academic Transcript is required, JAMB transfer form duly signed by the present University, mailed to: The Registrar, Igbinedion University, Okada, Ovia North-East LGA; or email to [email protected]

Postgraduate Admission Requirments

  1. A Candidate for Postgraduate Studies in Igbinedion University must have obtained at least five (5) credits in WASC, NECO, GCE (ordinary level or their equivalents)    NOTE: A CREDIT PASS IN MATHS AND ENGLISH IS REQUIRED.
  2. Four credits at Ordinary level, Plus ONO (not pass), NCE, IJMB or Advance level passes or any other equivalent.
  3. A holder of a Pass (Degree/Diploma) is not qualified for admission into the postgraduate programme of the degree. He/She must possess PGD to be considered for admission into the Masters Programmes.
  4. A candidate applying for the PhD in any Programme of Igbinedion University must have obtained a minimum weighted average score of 60% in the Master’s degree.
  5. Only students who have the NYSC discharge, exemption or exclusion can be allowed to clear into the different courses.

A Certified Stem Cell Transplantologist and Clinical Apheresis from the Basel University Teaching Hospital Switzerland. Prof. Bazuaye pioneered the first successful stem cell transplant in Sub-Sahara Africa for the cure of sickle cell disease in 2011, the first automated red cell exchange in Nigeria for sickle cell disease in 2014 and the first stem cell transplantation for blood cancer (multiple myeloma). He is currently a collaborating stem cell transplatologist with the first and only private stem cell transplant centre (Celitek Healthcare Medical Centre) in sub-Sahara Africa where he has performed 18 stem cell transplantation for the cure of patients with sickle cell disease, four multiple myeloma and one aplastic anaemia patients. He has co-authored books, published several research articles, and won several academic and professional awards. History

The University commenced its academic programmes in the 1999/2000 session in five Colleges namely, Arts and Social Sciences, Business and Management Studies, Health Sciences, Law and Natural and Applied Sciences. The foundation students arrived Okada on Friday, 15th October 1999. Since then, the University has without interruption upheld its resolve to return tertiary education to the internationally accepted calendar of September to June. The College of Engineering commenced its programme in the 2002/2003 session. The College of Health Sciences continued to be an area of popular demand. ng Hospital administered by a Management Board inaugurated first on 12th January 2003, oversees the affairs of the Hospital. As part of its objectives to train and produce job providers, Igbinedion University has Packaged entrepreneurial and skills acquisitions modules to expose students sufficiently enough to be ‘fit for the world of work’. In addition, a community service programme was introduced in the 2009/2010 session. Under the programme, all second year students across the Colleges are required to undertake a practical development Programme in a chosen area and community in and round the university/town.

The student population has grown steadily from 111 in the 1999/2000 session to 5036 in 2012/2013, while the staff strength has increased from 55 in 1999/2000 to 565 made of 290 Teaching staff (50 of who are Professors) 153 Senior Non-Teaching staff and 213 Junior and Intermediate staff over the same period.

Academic programmes in Medicine, Law, Arts and Social Sciences, Business and Management Studies, Natural and Applied Sciences and Engineering which are mature, are re-accredited, from time to time by Nigerian Universities Commission and the relevant Professional bodies.

The Oba Erediauwa College of Law turned out its first crop of graduates in 2004.
