Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University (JOSTUM), formerly known as the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi (UAM), is a higher education institution in Makurdi, Benue State, Nigeria. It was established in 1988 and renamed in 2019 to honor the late politician Joseph Sarwuan Tarka. The university offers programs in various areas, including agronomy, animal science, agricultural economics, and more.

Undergraduate Admission Requirement

A. General Entry Requirements

  • Minimum of five (5) O’Level credits including English Language, Mathematics, and relevant subjects.
  • Credits must be obtained in not more than two sittings (WAEC, NECO, or NABTEB).
  • Must have sat for the UTME and scored at least 170 or above (depending on the course).
  • Must have selected Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University as first choice in JAMB.
  • Candidates who did not initially choose JOSTUM must apply for a change of institution through JAMB.
  • Must participate in the University Post-UTME Screening Exercise.

B. Direct Entry Requirements

  • Must possess at least two A-Level passes, or
  • OND/NCE/HND/Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline from a recognized institution.
  • Must register for JAMB Direct Entry.
  • Transcript and academic records must be submitted to the Registrar, JOSTUM.

  • Bachelor’s degree with at least Second Class Lower Division in a relevant field.
  • NYSC discharge or exemption certificate required.
  • Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.):
  • Master’s degree in the same field with weighted average of 60% or above.

Prof. Isaac Nathaniel Itodo

Professor Isaac Nathaniel Itodo was born on 18th August, 1964.  He obtained a B.Eng in Agricultural Engineering in 1986, a MSc in 1989 and a PhD in 1993 from the University of Ibadan.

He started his academic career as Graduate Assistant in the Department of Agricultural Engineering, University of Jos in 1987 and rose to the rank of Professor in October 2003. He was Head, Department... read more

He is a Fellow of the NSE, Solar Energy Society of Nigeria and the Nigerian Institution of Agricultural Engineers. He is also a member of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers and the International Solar Energy Society. He was President of Solar Energy Society of Nigeria and was elected Life Member of the society in 2020. He was Lead Consultant to the UND and served on the technical committees that developed the bio-fuels training manual and development of standards for bio-fuels production in Nigeria. Professor Itodo was the Technical Secretary of the Committee of Deans of Engineering and Technology of Nigerian Universities and was an ERM Inspector.

History

The Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University Makurdi, JOSTUM (formerly Federal University of Agriculture Makurdi) established on 1st of January, 1988 had evolved from the defunct Federal University of Technology which was established in 1980 and later became the Makurdi campus of the University of Jos (Uni-Jos) in October, 1980.
