Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, is an institution of higher learning owned by the Kwara State Government, Nigeria. It is a university which has attained a prominent position in the comity of universities in Nigeria. KWASU began academic operation in October 2009 with lectures starting in December 2009. There were five hundred and fifty (550) students in the five (5) Colleges:

  1. Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine
  2. Education
  3. Humanities, Management and Social Sciences
  4. Information and Communication Technology
  5. Pure and Applied Sciences

The faculty of Engineering and Technology was established in 2010 as the sixth faculty. The University then changed from the collegiate system to faculties in 2019 while the faculty of Law, the seventh faculty, was accredited by both the National Universities Commission (NUC) and Council for Legal Education in 2020.

Undergraduate Admission Requirement

  1. The minimum age for entry into tertiary institutions is 16 years unless the candidate was certified as gifted.
  2. A student entering a tertiary institution must produce a letter of recommendation / testimonial from the principal of his or her last Secondary School.
  3. As a condition for admission, or re-admission, every student must produce a letter of reference from a person of reputable standing in the society who can vouch for the good behaviour of the student.
  4. Direct Entry admission is also available for applicants with suitable qualifications who obtained Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) DE Form.
  5. Applicants must have JAMB Result and possess a minimum of five (5) credits in WASSCE/NECO/GCE/NABTEB/SISC Examinations or their equivalent at not more than two (2) sittings in the subjects relevant to their proposed Undergraduate Programmes.
  6. English Language at credit level is compulsory for all candidates. In addition, credit in Mathematics is compulsory for candidates seeking admission into Degree Programmes in the Faculty of Management Sciences, Natural and Applied Sciences and some Education Courses.

Postgraduate Admission Requirments

  1. Applicants must possess First Degree from any other recognised University. However all candidates must satisfy the University’s O’level requirements.
  2. Applicants with Master Degree from any other recognised Universities and is applying to study for a Doctorate Degree must have scored at least 60% or its equivalent in CGPA in the final Master Degree Examination to qualify for the admission to Doctor of Philosophy Programmes.
  3. Applicants for the academic or Professional Master degree programme who are graduates of any other recognised Universities and must possess minimum of Second Class Honours Degree (Lower Division).
  4. Applicants with Third Class Honour Degree with Postgraduate Diploma Certificate in relevant field may be admitted provided they score a minimum of 60% in the qualifying examination to be administered by respective Departments in the University.

Vice Chancellor

Professor Shaykh-Luqman Alade Jimoh

Shaykh Luqman Jimoh is a Nigerian professor of Islamic medicine and theology who became the acting vice chancellor of Kwara State University, Malete, Kwara State, Nigeria, since 5 January 2023 following the death of former vice chancellor, Professor Mustapha Akanbi. He was the deputy vice-chancellor (academics) until his appointment as the vice-chancellor.

n in 2020. The University started postgraduate programmes during the 2014/2015 academic session with the establishment of the School of Postgraduate Studies.

The faculty of Basic Medical Sciences commenced activities in 2022 following the requisite approval from the NUC. In March 2023, the faculty of Humanities, Management and Social Sciences was unbundled to create the faculties of Arts and that of Management and Social Sciences. In 2024, the faculty of Allied Health Sciences was created out of the faculty of Basic Medical Sciences and in the 2024/2025 academic session, the faculty of Environmental Sciences came on board and is sited in the Osi campus, thus bringing the number of faculties to 11.

The University has graduated twelve (12) sets of first-degree graduates and six (9) sets of postgraduate students. Overall, KWASU has a rich history of academic excellence and a bright future ahead.
