tudents), Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education), and Executive Dean of Law, Humanities and the Arts, all at the University of Wollongong, and Dean of Arts and Social Sciences at City, University of London. From 2006 to 2016, he held a chair in online learning at King’s College London. At UOW, City and King’s, Professor Farrell led numerous initiatives to develop research capacities, innovate learning and teaching, and enhance student experience.

Professor Farrell has held ten UK research council awards. His most recent book, Unwinnable: Britain’s War in Afghanistan (Vintage 2021), was shortlisted for three national book awards and selected book of the year by The Sunday Times. Professor Farrell is a champion of real-world impact from academic research. A leading expert on the conflict in Afghanistan, he acted as strategic advisor to the UK government and the International Security Assistance Force in Kabul, and participated in track II talks with the Taliban.

    Margaret has a history of facilitating multi-agency and multi-government partnerships and engagement initiatives and is passionate about promoting conversations that enable those with a stake in decisions to be heard. She is particularly concerned to improve access to education, health, community services, and the arts to people in the North of Melbourne and, in particular, local immigrant and emerging communities.

    Margaret is currently the Deputy Chair of the Melbourne Health Service Community Advisory Committee and sits on a number of other hospital committees. Previously, she held a range of board and senior management roles in government and the not-for-profit sector in the fields of health, multicultural media, women’s affairs, and education.

She has been Head of the Rural Allied Health Department and until recently was Associate Dean Learning and Teaching.  She is a researcher within the Violet Vines Marshman Centre for Rural Health Research and her research focuses on workforce. She was President of Occupational Therapy Australia (2019-2023), past Board Chair and Director of Rochester and Elmore District Health Service (2017-2023) and is a current Board Director of Bendigo Health.

    Since retiring from politics in 2010, John Brumby has taken on a number of roles in the not-for-profit and business sectors, including as Chair of the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Trust, Citywide Service Solutions and the Fred Hollows Foundation. He is also the inaugural Chair of the Victorian Government's $2 billion Breakthrough Victoria Fund.

    Mr Brumby was awarded an Order of Australia in 2017 for distinguished service to the Parliament of Victoria, to economic management and medical biotechnology innovation, to improved rural and regional infrastructure, and to the community. He is the author of a number of articles and books, including the 2015 book The Long Haul: Lessons from Public Life (Melbourne University Publishing).

History

We have been one of Australia's pioneering universities for more than 50 years. In 1967, 552 students enrolled at La Trobe University, the third university to open in Victoria, which has grown to accommodate more than 36,000 students, with over 7,000 international students from 110 countries.

We now have a network of campuses, with over 28,000 students at our Melbourne Campus and over 7,500 at our campuses in Albury-Wodonga, Bendigo, Mildura, Melbourne City (Collins Street), Shepparton and Sydney.
