Professor Farrell has held ten UK research council awards. His most recent book, Unwinnable: Britain’s War in Afghanistan (Vintage 2021), was shortlisted for three national book awards and selected book of the year by The Sunday Times. Professor Farrell is a champion of real-world impact from academic research. A leading expert on the conflict in Afghanistan, he acted as strategic advisor to the UK government and the International Security Assistance Force in Kabul, and participated in track II talks with the Taliban.
Margaret has a history of facilitating multi-agency and multi-government partnerships and engagement initiatives and is passionate about promoting conversations that enable those with a stake in decisions to be heard. She is particularly concerned to improve access to education, health, community services, and the arts to people in the North of Melbourne and, in particular, local immigrant and emerging communities.
Margaret is currently the Deputy Chair of the Melbourne Health Service Community Advisory Committee and sits on a number of other hospital committees. Previously, she held a range of board and senior management roles in government and the not-for-profit sector in the fields of health, multicultural media, women’s affairs, and education.
Since retiring from politics in 2010, John Brumby has taken on a number of roles in the not-for-profit and business sectors, including as Chair of the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Trust, Citywide Service Solutions and the Fred Hollows Foundation. He is also the inaugural Chair of the Victorian Government's $2 billion Breakthrough Victoria Fund.
Mr Brumby was awarded an Order of Australia in 2017 for distinguished service to the Parliament of Victoria, to economic management and medical biotechnology innovation, to improved rural and regional infrastructure, and to the community. He is the author of a number of articles and books, including the 2015 book The Long Haul: Lessons from Public Life (Melbourne University Publishing).
Associate Professor, Melanie Bish was appointed the role of Pro Vice-Chancellor (Regional) in January 2023. With a long history at La Trobe University, Melanie has always been active in the promotion of the health and wellbeing of people in rural and regional Australia, focusing on education, research, and advocacy to strengthen the social and economic benefits of a robust health workforce for communities.
We have been one of Australia's pioneering universities for more than 50 years. In 1967, 552 students enrolled at La Trobe University, the third university to open in Victoria, which has grown to accommodate more than 36,000 students, with over 7,000 international students from 110 countries.
