About

The Federal Ministry of Transport acting through the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), and in the execution of its mandate, proposed the establishment of the Nigeria Maritime University, Okerenkoko, Warri South West Local Government Area, Delta State, Nigeria.

Okerenkoko, where the permanent site of the University is located sits on the left bank of the Escravos River noted for shipping and inland water borne transportation. The Escravos River opens into the Atlantic Ocean and it is a preferred route for ocean-going vessels engaged in the oil and gas industry.The University was established in response to the chronic shortage of professional human capital and global competitive technical know how in the maritime industry and economy.

Mission

The mission of the Nigeria Maritime University is to provide excellent facilities and faculties for training, research, and production of maritime human resources and equipment where staff and students can achieve their professional goals and support Nigeria to exploit her maritime endowments to become a leading player in the world’s knowledge-driven economy.

The vision of the Nigeria Maritime University is to be the maritime institution of first choice for all those who seek to make a career in the industry and to contribute to the creation of employment and wealth in the global maritime economy.

Objectives

The Nigeria Maritime University has outlined its objectives aimed at meeting its vision and mission. The objectives of the Nigeria Maritime University are:

  1.  To encourage the advancement of knowledge in the maritime sector and to hold out to all persons without distinction of race, creed, sex, or political conviction the opportunity of acquiring higher education in maritime technology and allied fields.
  2.  To provide courses of instruction and training leading to the award of degrees, diplomas, and certificates in fields of maritime training /industry.
  3. To encourage scholarship and to conduct research in all fields related to the maritime industry.
  4. To develop infrastructure and facilities for the design and production of maritime vessels and equipment.
  5. To relate the activities of the University to the social and economic needs of Nigeria.
  6. To undertake any other activities appropriate for a maritime institution.

Undergraduate Admission Requirement

  • Candidates seeking admission into any programme of the Maritime Academy of Nigeria must have a functional and accessible electronic mail address (E-mail) and Mobile number

National Diploma Programme(ND)

  • The Admission process into National Diploma programme of the Academy is through Joint Admissions And Matriculation Board (JAMB)/Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) only.
  • The duration of ND programme is two (2) years, divided into four (4) semesters

Screening/Aptitude Test:

  • Candidates are subjected to Screening Exercise/Aptitude Test which may be changed from time to time as decided by the Management/Regulatory Authority.
  • Candidates must pass Medical Examination and Physical Fitness before he/she can be considered for admission.

Postgraduate Admission Requirments

  1. To qualify for any of the advertised certificate courses, candidates must have five (5) credit passes at the O/Level or its equivalent. Cognate work experience with relevant professional
  2. To qualify for admission into any of the postgraduate programmes, a candidate must meet, among others, all matriculation requirements of at least five (5) credit passes including English Language and Mathematics. Some programmes may accept at least a pass in Mathematics;
  3. For Postgraduate Diploma Programmes: Candidates must possess either a minimum of Third Class (Honours) Bachelor’s Degree in any discipline from a university recognised by the Senate of the NDA/NMU OR a Higher National Diploma with a minimum of Lower Credit. Equivalent and relevant professional certificates may also be accepted with continuous more than two (2) years’ work experience;
  4. For Master’s degree programmes: candidates must possess either a Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of Second Class Lower in relevant fields of study from a recognized University in or from outside Nigeria. However, holders of lower classifications OR a Postgraduate
  5. Diploma in related fields of study from a recognised University may be accepted. An equivalent of relevant professional certificates and a more than four (4) years continuous work experience is an advantage and may be accepted;
  6. For the Doctor of Philosophy Degree programmes: candidates must possess a master’s degree in relevant fields of study from a university with a minimum score average of not less than 60% or a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.0 on a 5-point scale. Those with lower CGPA with continues work experience and professional certificates may be accepted.

History

The global maritime economy has become increasingly knowledge driven, necessitating the production of local high level professionals imbued with requisite dosage of nationalism and patriotism. In February 2018 the National Universities Commission (NUC) gave approval to commence degree programmes in the University. To enable the University commence academic activities in the 2017/2018 academic session a well-developed temporary site located at Kurutie town has been acquired for the University. The University took off with three Faculties, thirteen Programmes/ Departments and a school of Basic studies.
