About

Spiritan University Nneochi (SUN), one of the nation’s top Catholic, faith-based and conventional Private Universities in Nigeria, located in Umunneochi, one of the rural Local Government Areas in Abia State, Nigeria was established by members of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit (Spiritans), Province of Nigeria South East in 2017. The Congregation is an International Religious Order in the Catholic Church founded in France on May 27, 1703. The members of this Religious Order began their educational and evangelization work in Nigeria in 1885.

Spiritan University Nneochi (SUN) was approved and licensed on December 6, 2017 by the Federal Executive Council (Government) of Nigeria on the recommendation of the National Universities Commission (NUC) Nigeria to operate as a Private and Conventional University. As a University, Spiritan University Nneochi (SUN) commenced academic activities in the 2018/2019 academic Session, with fifteen (15) departments/programmes in the Faculties of Natural & Applied Sciences, Arts, Management and Social Sciences. Also established at this time are the Units of General and Entrepreneurial Studies.

Mission

The mission of the Spiritan University is to produce knowledgeable and skillful graduates that are equipped, through functional education and value re-orientation, to effectively harness the environment and act as catalysts for the development of the Nigerian society and humanity at large.

Vision

The vision of the Spiritan University is to be a university that provides opportunities for the inculcation of academic excellence and positive value reorientation through acquisition, conservation, dissemination and application of knowledge for the production of globally competitive graduates. Our focus will be on an all round development of the individual member of the University community without discrimination on the basis of gender, ethnicity or religion. Students will receive quality education in line with international standards and will be ready to stand the challenges of work and life.

Undergraduate Admission Requirement

  1. Candidates must possess a minimum of five credits at no more than two sittings in the WASC, SSCE or NECO and these must include English and Mathematics and prerequisite combination of courses for the desired programme of study.
  2. Candidates applying to Spiritan University must have at least the National Cutoff Score in the UTME of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
  3. Candidates who did not originally choose Spiritan University as First Choice Institution are advised to do a change of Institution right away. 

Supporting Documents

  1. Original and/or photocopy of your JAMB/UTME result slip (showing your photograph).
  2. O’Level result certificate(s) (WAEC, NECO, SSCE, etc.) showing at least five (5) credit passes (including English and Mathematics) in no more than two sittings
  3. Certificate or print-out of your “Change of Institution” if you did not originally choose SUN as your first choice in JAMB. 
  4. Photostat copy of your birth certificate or sworn declaration of age. 
  5. Two recent passport-sized photographs.
  6. Your JAMB subject-combination details for the course you applied.
  7. Non-refundable acceptance fee receipt (for successful candidates)

Postgraduate Admission Requirments

  1. Candidates must possess a minimum of five credit passes at not more than two sittings in the WASC/SSCE/NECO; these must include English Language and Mathematics, and the prerequisite subject combination for the programme they wish to pursue.
  2. Candidates must hold a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university (and meet any additional criteria set by the relevant faculty or department).
  3. Candidates must meet the university’s general admission criteria for postgraduate study (in addition to the above).
  4. Candidates applying to Spiritan University for postgraduate programmes must ensure they fulfill any required screening, research-proposal or interview elements specific to the department.

Supporting Documents

  1. First degree certificate (Bachelor’s) AND academic transcript from a recognized institution.
  2. For higher postgraduate levels (e.g., Master’s, PhD) the Master’s degree certificate (and transcript) where applicable.
  3. O’Level result certificate showing at least five credits including English and Mathematics (depending on programme entry rules).
  4. Recent passport-sized photographs.
  5. Birth certificate or sworn declaration of age.
  6. Application/registration fee payment receipt.
  7. Referees’ letters and/or a research proposal (for research-based programmes).

  2. Download or access the online application form for postgraduate programmes (PGD, M.A/M.Sc, Ph.D as applicable).
  3. Complete the form with your personal biography, academic history, intended programme of study, and upload required scanned supporting documents (see first section).
  4. Pay the required application/registration fee via the payment method specified by the university.
  5. Submit your completed application form within the admission window. Monitor your email or the university portal for screening/interview dates, admission decisions, and registration instructions.

    Religious-Missionary-Priest, Fr. Oj. has lived and worked in Ethiopia, Nigeria and United States of America in Pastoral, Administration and Education fields. He obtained a doctorate degree in Leadership and Policy in Education from DePaul University,  Chicago, IL.

    Prior to his priestly ordination, he earned a Master's degree in Theology from Spiritan International School of Theology (SIST), Attakwu, Enugu, affiliate of Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, PA.
    He also has  Bachelor of Science degree from University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Fr. Oj. trained as a hospital chaplain at Loyola Medical Center, Maywood, IL.

History

With the establishment of two higher institutions: Spiritan International School of Theology, Attakwu, Enugu, Enugu State and Spiritan School of Philosophy, Isienu, Nsukka, Enugu State which are affiliated to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka and are offering NUC accredited degree programmes, the Holy Ghost Congregation, Province of Nigeria, South East, under the leadership of Very Rev. Spiritan University Nneochi was finally approved and licensed as a Private University on December 6, 2017 by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) on the recommendation of National Universities Commission (NUC). The Provisional License was presented to the Proprietors on December 19, 2017 by Prof. Abubakar A. Rasheed, Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC). The University enrolled its first students in the 2018/2019 Academic Year.

Spiritan University is an answer to the national call for private participation in the provision of University education as contained in the Education (National Minimum Standards and Establishment of Institutions) Act No. 9 of 1993. The Proprietors are set to complement Government’s efforts in providing quality University education at affordable rate.
