About

Established in 2013 by the Jigawa State Government and licensed by the Federal Government through the National Universities Commission (NUC) as the 39th State-Owned University and 129th in the Nigerian University System. The University, which took off with academic programmes in Science, Education and Humanities, is now a comprehensive citadel of learning with academic programmes in Six Faculties namely, Agriculture and Natural Resource Management, Computing & Information Technology, Education, Humanities, Natural and Applied Sciences and Social and Management Sciences.

    The UTME minimum cut-off mark for 2025/2026 at SLU is reported as 150 and above for many programmes. You may have a better chance of admission compared to the most competitive top-tier universities, as long as you prepare adequately and meet requirements.

Undergraduate Admission Requirement

  1. A minimum of five (5) credit passes at O-Level (WAEC, NECO or equivalent), including English Language and Mathematics, in not more than two sittings.
  2. A valid UTME score and meeting the university’s cut-off mark for UTME admission. 
  3. For Direct Entry (DE) candidates: qualification such as NCE, IJMBE, Diploma, etc., with required points/credit and relevant subject combination.
  4. For part-time or other special programmes: the university may allow admission without UTME for some programmes.

Supporting Documents

  1. O-Level (WAEC/NECO) result certificate(s) 
  2. UTME result slip or registration number (for UTME applicants). 
  3. Direct Entry certificate if applicable (e.g., NCE, IJMBE, Diploma).
  4. Birth certificate or Declaration of Age. 
  5. Indigene/State of Origin certificate (where required) or certificate of Local Government.
  6. Recent passport-sized photographs.
  7. Application/Screening fee payment receipt proof.

Postgraduate Admission Requirments

  • Postgraduate Diploma (PGD): Must hold at least a First Degree (minimum 3rd Class) or HND (minimum lower credit) or equivalent, and satisfy the university matriculation requirement.
  • Master’s (M.A/M.Sc/M.Ed): Must hold a Bachelor’s degree in relevant discipline, with at least Second Class Lower (2:2) or equivalent CGPA (e.g., minimum CGPA 2.75 on a 0-5 scale) OR a lower CGPA (2.40-2.74) plus a PGD with minimum CGPA of 3.00. 
  • PhD: Must hold a relevant Master’s degree with a minimum CGPA (e.g., 3.50 on a 0-5 scale) and satisfy other conditions set by the SPGS and Senate. 
  • All applicants must satisfy O-Level matriculation requirement (five credits including English & Maths) in many cases.

Supporting Documents

  1. Bachelor’s degree certificate (and transcript) for Master’s entry; Master’s certificate for PhD entry. 
  2. Academic transcript of previous degree(s).
  3. O-Level certificate (showing five credits at least). 
  4. NYSC discharge/exemption certificate (where required) – many sources indicate this. 
  5. Recent passport-sized photographs.
  6. Proof of application fee payment (PG application fee at SLU is N20,000).

How To Apply For Admission

  1. Visit SLU’s online admissions portal (for undergraduate UTME/DE) – e.g., admissions.slu.edu.ng/utme-de or the general admissions section.
  2. Register/create an account, log in using your details (UTME number etc.). 
  3. Fill in the online application form: enter your personal data, UTME/DE details, upload required scanned documents.
  4. Pay the non-refundable application/screening fee (e.g., N2,000). 
  5. Submit the application and wait for the screening/admission list. If offered admission, log into the acceptance portal to pay acceptance fee and download Admission Letter.

Vice Chancellor

Professor Muhammad Ibrahim Yakasai

Professor Muhammad Ibrahim Yakasai was born in 1960 in Garun Gabas, Jigawa State, Nigeria. He obtained a B.A. Ed. in History from Bayero University Kano in 1986, an M.Ed. in Educational Psychology in 1991, and later earned his Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, in 2000.

s, serving in key positions such as Head of Department, Deputy Dean of Student Affairs, Dean of the Faculty of Education, and Dean of the Postgraduate School. He also chaired the Departmental Quality Assurance Committee.

His research focuses on Educational Psychology and Human Resource Management in Local Government Administration. He is a member of the Nigerian Academy of Education and the Counselling Association of Nigeria.

In December 2023, Professor Yakasai was appointed Vice Chancellor of Sule Lamido University, Kafin Hausa, Jigawa State.

Prof. Sa’idu Babura AhmeThe history of the University dates back to 22nd June, 2010 when the State Executive Council constituted a 9–Member Technical Committee chaired by Prof. Munzali Jibril, a former Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC). The Committee submitted its Report on 31st December, 2010 which included an Academic Brief and the Draft University Law.
