  • Library: The main Library on Campus West consists of the Morrell, the Fairhurst and the Burton, and we have well over 1,000 single-and-group study spaces across our sites. These are divided into zones for different studying styles, with a blended approach of bookable and non-bookable spaces.
  • Accommodation: Accommodation at York is connected to their eleven college communities, located on the compact parkland campus. With teaching, study and social facilities nearby, you'll have everything you need to make the most of university life.
  • Sports: No matter your ability, you can choose from over 75 student-run clubs to join, from cheerleading to fencing, skydiving to triathlon. There's something for everyone.
  • ICT: Computers are available in multiple study spaces across campus. They have machines running Windows, Mac and Linux operating systems available for students to use.

Vice Chancellor

Professor Charlie Jeffery

Charlie became Vice-Chancellor and President at the University of York in September 2019. He joined us from the University of Edinburgh where he had been Senior Vice-Principal since 2014. He was a Member of Council of the Economic and Social Research Council from 2006-12 and Chair of the Political Studies Association of the UK from 2009-12.

History

John Bowes Morrell was the driving force behind the university's establishment. York accepted its first students the year of Morrell's death, 1963, opening with 216 undergraduates, 14 postgraduates, and 28 academic and administrative staff. The university started with six departments: Economics, Education, English, History, Mathematics, Politics. At the time, the university consisted of three buildings, principally the historic King's Manor in the city centre and Heslington Hall, which has Tudor foundations and is in the village of Heslington on the edge of York.
