Université Laval, situated here in one of North America's oldest cities, is also the oldest university in Canada. It was also the first North American institution to offer courses in French, starting as a seminary in 1663 until its royal charter was received in 1852.

The English-speaking population already had five institutions of higher education to choose from, but there were none for French speakers.
