The University of Benin (UNIBEN), established in 1970, is a public research university located in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. Initially known as the Midwest Institute of Technology, it became a full university in 1971 and was later taken over by the Federal Government in 1975. Today, UNIBEN is a federal government university with fifteen faculties, three schools, three institutes, and fifteen centers, offering a wide range of programs

Undergraduate Admission Requirement

Candidate must fulfill the following criteria:

  1. Only candidates who applied through JAMB for the 2024/2025 UTME Admission and chose the University of Benin as First Choice and scored 200 and above are eligible for this Screening Exercise.NOTE THAT CANDIDATES AWAITING RESULTS CAN GO AHEAD TO APPLY FOR SCREENING
  2. Obtained at least five (5) credit passes at GCE O/L, SSCE, NECO, or their equivalent. The subjects must include English Language, and Mathematics (for courses for which a credit in mathematics is required) as well as three other relevant subjects (four if excluding mathematics); at not more than two sittings.

Postgraduate Admission Requirments

  1. A Candidate for postgraduate studies in the University of Benin must have obtained at least five (5) credits in WASC, NECO, GCE (ordinary level or their equivalents,) NOTE: A CREDIT PASS IN MATHS AND ENGLISH IS REQUIRED.
  2. Four credits at Ordinary level, plus OND (not pass), NCE, IJMB or Advance level passes or any other equivalent..
  3. A holder of a Pass (Degree/Diploma) is not qualified for admission into the postgraduate programme of the University of Benin. In addition, all holders of 3rd class degree must possess PGD to be considered for admission into the Masters programmes. 
  4. Candidates who obtained Master's degree but with Weighted Average Score (WAS) between 55.0-59% can only be considered for admission into the M.Phil programme in the first instance.
  5. A candidate applying for the Ph.D in any programme of the University of Benin must have obtained a minimum weighted average score of 60% in the Master's degree. 
  6. A candidate applying for the PhD with a Master's degree from any other University who in his/her Master's study has not previously taken the compulsory courses or their equivalents similar to the ones in the University of Benin shall, on admission, be required to offer and pass such courses with a minimum of 60%.
  7. Only students who have the NYSC discharge, exemption or exclusion certificate can be allowed to clear into the different courses.

Undergraduate Application 

  1. Candidates are advised to have a valid e-mail account before starting the application process.
  2. Visit www.uniben.edu Click on Student Portal; Select the WAEUP PORTAL.
  3. Click on Applicants and then select UNIBEN ADMISSION SCREENING 2024/2025
  4. Click on Register for application at the top left of the displayed page to proceed.
  5. Enter your Surname Exactly as written on the JAMB Registration slip, and JAMB Registration number. Immediately, your ID and Password will be displayed on the browser
  6. Back On waeup.uniben.edu click on 'Login' (top right of the front page).
  7. Enter your username and the password to login.
  8. To start the application process, please click on 'Application record' and provide all required information.
  9. To pay for the Application, click on “Add online payment ticket” at the bottom of the page, then click on “Pay with Remita” on the top left corner of the page, follow the instruction to pay the application fee of N 2000; with a valid ATM-Enabled Card from any Commercial Bank in Nigeria
  10. Preview and confirm your information before submitting your application online. (No correction will be accepted after the closing date).
  11. Go back online on the appointed date (Thursday ) to print out the acknowledgement slip that contains your specific screening schedule

Postgraduate Application

  2. On the UNIBEN.EDU SITE, Select Student Portal; Then The UNIBEN Waeup Portal.
    Candidates are advised to have a valid e-mail account before starting the application process (Please note: - not the cyber-cafe’s email).
  3. Click on Postgraduate Programmes Applications 2023/2024 (ALL PROGRAMMES)
  4. Click on Register for application at the top left of the displayed page to proceed.
  5. Provide all necessary information. Note that * means compulsory fields.
  6. An immediate mail will be sent to the provided e-mail address.
  7. Open your mail to get your system generated ID and Password that you will use to login.
  8. On waeup.uniben.edu click on 'Login' (top right of the front page).
  9. Enter your user name and the password from the mail to login.
  10. To start the application process, please click on 'Edit application record' and provide all required information and upload your passport photograph.
  11. Upload a clear 1” x 1” COLOURED passport photograph with red background in JPEG format only. NOTE that the photograph uploaded will be the only valid ID for all admitted candidates throughout their stay in the University of Benin. FAILURE TO UPLOAD THE SPECIFIED PASSPORT PHOTOGRAPH WILL LEAD TO DISQUAILIFICATION AND FAILURE/FORFEITURE OF ADMISSION

Professor Edoba Bright Omoregie (SAN)

Professor Edoba B. Omoregie, SAN, was born on 5th April, 1969, in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria, to the Irowa-Omoregie Family of Benin City.

Professor Omoregie attended the Nigerian Law School, Victoria Island-Lagos, from 1991-1992, and qualified as a Barrister and Solicitor. He then proceeded for the National Youth Corps Scheme in Plateau State, serving his primary assignment with Akwanga Local Government Council (now part of Nasarawa State) as Legal Adviser.

History

The University of Benin (UNIBEN) is a government owned tertiary institution, established on the 23rd of November, 1970, by the then Colonel Samuel OsaigbovoOgbemudia-led military administration of Midwest State. The University was established, first as Midwest Institute of Technology.

After attaining the status of a full-fledged university in line with requirementsof the National Universities Commission on the 1st of July, 1971, the name was changed to the University of Benin. The Institution became a federal government owned University on the 1st of April, 1975.

d (which is now one of the campuses of the University – Ekehuan Campus) with 109 students, now has an estimated 60,000 studentspopulation who are spread across the two campuses of the University.The University has 15 Faculties, 1 College and 3 Institutes.

Out of the 12 Vice Chancellors who have led the institution, only two have been female. The first, Professor Grace Alele-Williams, made history in 1985 as the first female Vice Chancellor of any Nigerian University. The second is Professor Lilian Imuetinyan Salami.

Since the establishment of the University, it has continued to break new grounds in the realization of its goals of teaching, learning, research and community service. It undertakes programmes at various levels of graduate and postgraduate, for which students are admitted annually. It is important to note that nearly all courses offered at the University of Benin are, by 2021, fully accredited.

For over five decades of its existence, the University of Benin has grown to mentor other institutions that operate as affiliate institutions to the University.They include: Lagos State University, Akoka, Lagos; College of Education, Warri; College of Education, Asaba; College of Education, Mosogar, and the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies, Abuja.

The University of Benin is also renown for collaborative researches with other universities -nationally and Internationally –including the Lancaster University, England .

Also, the University has gained national, regional and international recognition with its pioneering drive in several areas; it is the first University in Nigeria to award degrees in Industrial Chemistry, first Nigerian University to develop an indigenous software for the conduct of Computer Based Testing (CBT), first Nigerian University to award Ph.D in Optometry, first University in South South geo-political zone of Nigeria to establish a Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, and in 2011, the University was ranked as the number one University in West Africa by WEBOMETRICS.
