  • Library: The Library is based on two sites: the Martial Rose Library (King Alfred Quarter) and the West Downs learning centre (West Downs Quarter). There are many different study opportunities; group study areas, quiet areas to study in, bookable PCs, docking stations and individual workstations where you can bring your own laptop. Their West Downs Library and the Martial Rose Library are open 24/7 for the University community with access outside staffed hours via validated University cards.
  • Laboratory: Over recent years, the University has invested heavily in new and improved laboratory facilities and equipment, including a purpose-built artefact and human bone store that meets the guidelines of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists.
  • Accommodation: The University of Winchester has a wide range of accommodation available to suit different requirements and budgets. All accommodation is University owned, managed or approved, either on- or off-campus. 
  • Sports: The sports hall is perfect for hosting a wide range of sports from Basketball, Volleyball, Dodgeball, Futsal, Frisbee, Badminton, Netball, and more.
  • Gym: Burma Road Student Village hosts the University Gym. The equipment supplied by both Technogym and Life Fitness provides an excellent work out experience.

History

The story of the University of Winchester started with a mission the Church of England had in the 1830s to create an institution that would train teachers to teach in poor communities. The Diocesan Training School was eventually established by Bishop Sumner in 1840. Its original location was 26/27 St Swithun Street, a grand terraced house only a short walk from Winchester Cathedral. It then moved to Wolvesey Palace before finally moving to the purpose-built buildings on West Hill in 1860.
