  • Classroom: As well as lecture theatres and seminar rooms, our city centre campus is home to specialist teaching spaces.
  • Library: Library and Learning Services provide students, staff and external visitors with a range of library and print services on the York and London campuses to support your learning, teaching and research.
  • Accommodation: The accommodation sites are all close to campus, and most are close to the city centre. The range of rooms offers different facilities and prices to suit all.
  • Place of Worship: The York St John chaplaincy provides spaces and opportunities for reflection, listening, confidential support, prayer, worship, meditation, socialising and spiritual exploration.
  • Cafeteria: From cooked breakfasts and lunches to delicious coffee and cakes, YSJ has a variety of food and drink options available on campus.
  • Sports: York St John University Sports Park incorporates outdoor 3G and grass pitches, a sports hall, strength and conditioning suite, and more. The 57-acre park is located just 1 mile from the main campus in the centre of York and is used by students and sports clubs.
  • Gym: On the main campus, their YSJActive Gym and classes are open to students, staff and the public. They offer a range of gym equipment and classes including yoga, aerobics, and female-only sessions.
  • Laboratory: Their specialist study facilities include labs for bioscience, health sciences, and psychology courses, practice rooms for occupational therapy and a nursing simulation ward.

History

The university descends from two Anglican teacher training colleges, which were founded in York in 1841 (for men) and 1846 (for women). In 1862, the women's college relocated to Ripon. Over the next century, the colleges gradually diversified their education programmes. The colleges, St John's College (named for John the Evangelist) and Ripon College, merged in 1974 to form the "College of Ripon and York St John".

In February 2006, the College was granted the right to award degrees in its own name and the right to call itself a university college. On 10 July 2006, the Privy Council approved a request from the college to become a full-fledged university; the name became "York St John University" on 1 October 2006, and the first Chancellor (installed at a ceremony in York Minster on 7 March 2007) was the Archbishop of York John Sentamu.
