About

Northwest University (formerly Yusuf Maitama Sule University, Kano), is a Nigerian public university owned by the Kano State Government. It has two campuses: City Campus located in Kano, and the main campus located along General Buhari Way Kofar Ruwa Kano. In 2017, the university initially renamed Yusuf Maitama Sule University as a tribute to Maitama Sule, the influential 20th-century Kano politician, was later renamed back to its original name, Northwest University, Kano.[

Undergraduate Admission Requirement

  • To apply for undergraduate admission at Yusuf Maitama Sule University, Kano (now Northwest University, Kano), you need a 2024/2025 UTME result with a score between 150 and 230, depending on the program, and at least five credit passes in subjects including English and Mathematics (in no more than two sittings) from WAEC/NECO/GCE or equivalents. 
  • Direct entry candidates require a minimum of two major subject passes in NCE with equivalent credits, or passes in two subjects at the IJMB/JUPEB examination. All candidates must also pass the university's post-UTME screening test.

Postgraduate Admission Requirments

    Return to the portal to complete the registration and print your acknowledge slip to be presented during screening

    All successful registered UTME Applicants should revisit 2025 screening portal and print the exam slip to be presented during PUTME Aptitute test.

History

Yusuf Maitama Sule University, formerly Northwest University was established in 2012 as the second Kano state-owned University, The first being Kano University of Science and Technology, (KUST) Wudil Kano. As the most populated state in the country, Kano experienced increasing demand for access to University education in order to accommodate the huge number of secondary school leavers.

Subsequently, the National Universities Commission (NUC) granted license for the establishment of the Northwest University now Yusuf Maitama Sule University, Kano as the 37th State University in the Country. Presently, the University has four campuses, namely the Main Campus; the City Campus; the KwanarDawaki Campus and the Murtala Muhammad Library Campus. There are five faculties comprising of Humanities, Science, Education, Basic Medical Science and Social and Management Sciences; and a College of Clinical Sciences.
