Algoma University, commonly shortened to Algoma U, is a Canadian public university in the province of Ontario, with campuses in Brampton, Sault Ste. Marie, and Timmins.     Students can choose to study at one of three campuses in Ontario: Sault Ste. Marie (main campus, close to nature), Brampton (Greater Toronto Area access to a tech hub), and Timmins (tailored to northern community needs).

Supporting Documents

  • Submit copies of all transcripts including secondary school transcripts, secondary school diplomas, post-secondary school transcripts, and diplomas/degrees, if applicable. All applicants must upload their documents on the AU Application Portal.
  • Send proof of English Language Proficiency (if applicable). 
  • Gap Letter/Gap Explanation – If you have been out of school for more than two years, you must provide documentation detailing your recent professional history. This documentation can include a resume, letters of employment, additional undeclared academic history, and/or a personal letter of explanation.
  • Copy of Study Permit/Visa. If you have completed any studies overseas (including Canada), please include a copy of your study permit or visa.

  • Library: The Arthur A. Wishart Library staff and resources are critical supports for delivering high-quality education to Algoma University students and for ensuring student success.
  • Laboratory: The new CL2 Laboratory, designed to global biosafety standards, equips Algoma U researchers and students to safely conduct advanced health sciences, biology and environmental science studies. This facility enables work with microorganisms, tissue cultures and other sensitive research areas, addressing a growing need for such capabilities in academic and professional settings.
  • Accommodation: Algoma University offers on-campus accommodation with various options like dormitories and townhouses at its Sault Ste. Marie campus. These residences feature private single rooms, common areas, shared kitchens, and amenities like high-speed internet and laundry facilities. Meal plans are required for dormitory residents and optional for townhouse residents. 
  • Sports: The George Leach Centre (GLC) is the official home of Algoma Thunderbird Athletics. In 2016, the GLC was expanded to include more space, equipment, and recreational options. They have three group fitness studios, three indoor courts, and a weight room with state-of-the-art equipment. The outdoor facility includes two tennis courts and basketball nets. 
  • Place of Worship: Algoma University has a place of worship, the Bishop Fauquier Memorial Chapel, which is a historic building on the Sault Ste. Marie campus.

History

Established in Sault Ste. Marie in 1965 as Algoma College, Algoma University was initially an affiliate of Sudbury's Laurentian University. In 1967, Algoma College began offering classes in a portable building located on the site of what is now Sault College. Algoma College moved into its current location, the former Shingwauk Residential School building, in 1971. In 2008, after operating as Algoma University College for many years, Algoma University was granted its charter, achieving full autonomous university status as Ontario’s 19th University.
