About

Founded in 1843, Bishop’s is a primarily undergraduate, English-language university with five faculties and over 100 programs. Tucked between two rivers in the green hills of the Eastern Townships region of Quebec, their 550-acre campus hosts a diverse and multitalented international student body of about 2,800 full-time students, many of whom live right on campus.

  • Library: Bishop's University has a library, called the Library Learning Commons (LLC), which supports students, staff, and faculty of both Bishop's University and Champlain College. It offers a modern environment for learning and research, including various study spaces, classrooms, and IT support. The university also has a historical space known as the "Old Library" in McGreer Hall. 
  • Laboratory: Their indoor laboratory facilities include biochemistry and molecular biology equipment, aquatic and terrestrial animal rooms, a greenhouse, incubators, centrifuges, and research microscopes. The outdoor facilities include the Peter Curry Marsh, acres of surrounding woodland, canoe access to the Massawippi and St Francis rivers, and easy access to the Johnville Bog.
  • Research Center: Their Research centre supports a wide range of scientific, scholarly, and creative research activities conducted by the faculty and students of the university.
  • Accommodation: BU offers some of the best residence accommodations in Canada! You get to pick from 7 different buildings. They all have common areas, communal kitchens available 24/7 (even if you have a meal plan), study spaces, and a room to really make your own. 
  • Sports: Stunning, luminous, incredible; these words and more have been used to describe the facilities within the John H. Price Sports and Recreation Centre. The diversity of our facilities makes our campus the ideal choice to welcome any type of sports team or camp.
  • Gym: The spectacular facility overlooks the St. Francis River and Coulter Field on one side. Floor-to-ceiling windows on three sides of the space. Brand new, state-of-the-art equipment. Take a couple of steps below and you will find the weight room featuring free weights and stretching area. Lots of natural light.
  • Place of Worship: St. Mark’s Chapel is located on the campus of Bishop’s University and Champlain Regional College. This historic chapel was consecrated in 1857 by George Jehoshaphat Mountain, the third Anglican Bishop of Quebec.
  • Cafeteria: Bishop's has six different food service locations across campus to fit all your needs. All of these locations are open to the public.

History

Bishop's University can trace its roots back to 1836 when Bishop's College School, a "Grammar School in connection with the College," was founded as the Lennoxville Classical School, an independent institute by Rev. Lucius Doolittle and Edward Chapman. The university section, Bishop's College was based on the grammar school and established by the Lord Bishop of Québec The Rt. Rev. Dr. George Jehoshaphat Mountain (who also served as the first principal of McGill College) on December 9, 1843, in Lennoxville, Quebec, for the education of members of the Church of England and erected into a university in 1853.
