About

Founded in 1952 with the founding philosophy of “benefiting the world widely,” Chonnam National University's College of Engineering is a representative college of a regional national university that has been in sync with the modern history of the Republic of Korea for the past 72 years.

To date, a total of 44,457 alumni, including 35,533 bachelor's degrees in engineering, 7,528 master's degrees in engineering, and 1,396 doctoral degrees in engineering, are active as top-level professional and technical personnel in domestic and international industries, academia, and research institutes. Currently, our university is developing into a representative college of engineering in the Republic of Korea with 167 professors, approximately 5,000 undergraduate students, and approximately 1,000 master's and doctoral students and researchers in 12 departments(divisions) dedicated to education and research.

In order to become a world-class college of engineering, our university operates joint research and student exchange programs, joint and dual degree programs with prestigious overseas universities, and helps students develop a global mindset and international sensibility. We are doing our best to provide the best education possible. In addition, we are establishing demand-centered education and implementing an engineering education accreditation system that satisfies students, industries, and parents, and fosters talents that the future society needs. We are also implementing an engineering education accreditation system that satisfies global standards as engineering technicians.
 

In addition, we are operating Kakao Tech Campus and GS Caltex industry-university courses, and we are also operating numerous education and research support projects supported by the government, such as the National University Promotion Project, LINC3.0 Project, Semiconductor Specialized University Project, Intelligent Innovation G5-AICT Center, Software-centered University Project, Energy+AI Core Talent Training Education and Research Project, and 4th Stage BK21 8 Education and Research Groups(Teams).

Undergraduate Admission Requirement

International Students:

  • The applicant must have non-Korean nationality.
  • Both parents must also have non-Korean nationality at the time of application.
  • The applicant and both parents must have obtained their foreign nationality before the applicant began the equivalent of Korean high-school education.
  • Applicants are not eligible if:
    • The applicant or either parent is a South Korean citizen.
    • The applicant or either parent has multiple citizenship including Korean citizenship.
    • The applicant is stateless.
       

Academic Background:

CNU requires you to have completed, or be expected to complete, education equivalent to high school under the Korean 12-year school system.

Language Proficiency: 

Requirements depend on the programme and admission track. Korean-language programmes generally require Korean proficiency, while programmes offering English-based study may have English-language requirements.

Academic qualification

You must:

  • Hold a Bachelor's degree, or
  • Be expected to receive your Bachelor's degree before enrollment.

Interestingly, CNU allows Master's applicants to apply to a department/major different from their undergraduate major, except for certain departments.

You must satisfy at least one of CNU's accepted language requirements:

Korean:

  • TOPIK Level 3 or higher, or
  • Level 3 or higher in CNU's regular Korean course.

English:

  • Library: CNU has an extensive library system comprising the Main Library, Jeongbo-Maru Library, Annex Library, Yeosu Campus Library, and specialist branch libraries for Law, Dentistry and Medicine. The combined library facilities cover about 41,242 m², with more than 6,100 seats and approximately 2 million books.

 

  • Accommodation: The university provides several residence halls/dormitories for students. Facilities include rooms, study spaces and dining/convenience facilities. For example, Residence Hall 9 at the Gwangju campus provides accommodation for male and female students and includes cafeterias, restaurants and a convenience store.

 

  • Laboratory: CNU has numerous specialised research and laboratory facilities supporting science, engineering, medicine, agriculture and other disciplines. These include research centres, engineering laboratories, agricultural research facilities, biomedical facilities and specialised experimental laboratories.

 

  • Classroom and Academic Buildings: The university has dedicated buildings for its various colleges and schools, including Humanities, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, Engineering, Agriculture and Life Sciences, Business, Education, Arts, Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Veterinary Medicine and other disciplines. Specialist facilities such as multimedia classrooms, computer rooms, design studios and teaching laboratories are also available.

 

  • Student Union and Dining Facilities: Students have access to student union buildings, cafeterias, cafés, restaurants, bookstores, convenience stores and other campus services. Some student facilities also include spaces for international-student meetings and prayer rooms.

History

Chonnam National University was established in 1952 through the merger of several higher-education institutions in the Jeonnam region. It began with five founding colleges, including colleges of Agriculture, Commerce, Education, Medicine, and Humanities/Sciences. For example, the College of Commerce was incorporated into CNU in 1952 as one of its five founding colleges.

Over the decades, CNU expanded into a comprehensive national university with campuses in Gwangju and Yeosu, developing a broad range of programmes in humanities, sciences, engineering, medicine, agriculture, business, social sciences and other fields.
