  • Classrooms: Instructors at Main Campus teach in modern classrooms and labs. With real-life simulation and the latest industry-standard equipment and tools, they excel at providing students with hands-on, experiential learning.
  • Library: NAIT has a library that provides students with access to books, research databases, technology, and quiet study spaces. The library also has collaboration rooms and is a hub for academic support services, including access to the Makerspace with 3D printers and other equipment. 
  • Laboratory: NAIT has laboratories, particularly for its Medical Laboratory Technology program, which includes practical laboratory sessions as part of its curriculum. These labs are used for hands-on learning in various areas of medical laboratory science, including microbiology, transfusion science, hematology, and clinical chemistry. 
  • Research Center: NAIT is home to 3 of the 60 Technology Access Centres (TACs) across Canada, including the Productivity and Innovation Centre (PIC) and various applied research centers focused on areas like clean technology, culinary innovation, and oil sands sustainability. NAIT's research is industry-driven and applied, with a focus on strengthening economic sectors in Alberta and Canada. 
  • Accommodation: NAIT has accommodation options, including on-campus housing and partnerships with nearby universities for residences. Students can also find off-campus housing, such as rentals, to live in. 
  • Sports: NAIT has an NHL-sized multipurpose arena that is home to their amazing Ooks athletics teams, surrounded by a 188-metre walking/running track! Their Fitness Weight Centre has a variety of strength and cardio equipment, as well as spaces such as squash and racquetball courts, available for student use. The gymnasium hosts drop-in sports for students. NAIT students also have access to MacEwan pool.
  • ICT: NAIT has extensive ICT facilities, including wireless internet access for students and staff through the EDUROAM network, a library, and makerspaces with technologies like 3D printing and robotics.
  • Place of Worship: NAIT provides space for worship by offering reflection rooms for personal meditation or prayer. The institution does not have a dedicated building for a specific religion but has set aside quiet spaces for students' spiritual and personal needs. 
  • Cafeteria: NAIT has multiple dining options that function as cafeterias, including the large Common Market, various food court-style locations like Bytes Cafe, and even a fine-dining restaurant, Ernest's. These options provide a range of services, from quick grab-and-go items to full-service meals prepared by culinary students.

History

In 1959, the Alberta provincial government decided to build an Edmonton facility to supplement apprenticeship and vocational training, which was at the time handled by the Provincial Institute of Technology and Art (PITA) in Calgary. The new institution would be named the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) and PITA would be renamed the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT). Construction of the new facility began in January 1962. The first class was enrolled in October, a group of 29 Communication Electrician apprentices.
