Admission

Undergraduate Admission Requirement

English language requirement

English is the language of instruction at UBC. All prospective students must demonstrate English-language competency prior to admission. There are numerous ways to meet the English Language Admission Standard.

General admission requirements

  • Graduation from high school
  • Minimum of 70% in Grade 11 or Grade 12 English (or their equivalents)
  • At least six academic/non-academic Grade 12 courses (recommended, but not required)

UBC considers your grades in all academic Grade 11 and Grade 12 classes, paying special attention to courses that relate to the degree you’re applying to.

International Students: 

Admission to UBC is competitive, and your requirements change depending on your degree and campus of choice. All applicants must meet UBC’s general admission requirements and English Language Admission Standard.

Research Center: Located on the unceded territory of the xwm??kw?y??m (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), Stó:l? and S?l?ílw?ta?/Selilwitulh (Tsleil- Waututh) Nations, CIRS operates as an interdisciplinary hub for sustainability research, teaching, planning and operations, as well as a sustainable building research subject.

Vice Chancellor

Dr. Benoit-Antoine Bacon

Dr. Benoit-Antoine Bacon started a five-year term as the 17th President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of British Columbia on November 1, 2023. Since 2020, he has also been serving on the Board of Directors of Universities Canada.

Before joining UBC, Dr. Bacon served in several academic leadership roles, including as President and Vice-Chancellor of Carleton University in Ottawa, Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic) at Queen’s University in Kingston, and as Provost and Vice-President (Academic Affairs) at Concordia University in his hometown of Montreal, where he was recognized with an award as Sustainability Champion.  

Dr. Bacon holds a PhD in neuropsychology from the University of Montreal, after which he undertook a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Glasgow, Scotland. His research in the field of cognitive neuroscience focuses on the links between brain activity and perception in the visual, auditory and vestibular systems, as well as on multisensory integration.

Point Grey established by British government as a Colonial Admiralty reserve – presumably for strategic reasons relating to protecting English Bay and the Fraser River estuary.

Initial proposal for a provincial university made by Superintendent of Education John Jessop, only six years after British Columbia joined Canada, with the total population still less than 50,000.

An Act Respecting the University of British Columbia... read more

i> passed by the provincial legislature. However, the political rivalry between Vancouver Island and the mainland leads to a dispute about where the university should be located.

1891

The first meeting of the new university’s senate in Victoria (Vancouver Island) fails to reach quorum when some members from the mainland fail to attend. A second meeting is never held, and the Act is allowed to lapse.

1892

South Vancouver District Municipality established, enclosing all the lands up to and including the western extremity of Point Grey “along the low water mark” of English Bay and the Fraser River.
