The Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue (UQAT) is a francophone public university affiliated with the Université du Québec network. Established as an independent institution in 1983, UQAT has been providing university education since 1970. It serves a vast territory with campuses in Rouyn-Noranda, Val-d'Or, and Amos, as well as regional centers in La Sarre, Mont-Laurier, Montreal, Notre-Dame-du-Nord, and a service point in Chibougamau

  • Accommodation: Students from Rouyn-Noranda and Val-d'Or have access to student residences within walking distance from their school. With more than 120 rooms in Rouyn-Noranda and 60 rooms in Val-d'Or, the residences allow students to live in a pleasant environment perfect for studying. The residences offer modern and spacious four-room appartments at affordable prices. Two room appartments are available for tenants who renew their lease.
  • Laboratory: Besides delivering various programs of study, the UQAT campus in Amos houses highly specialized laboratories and research teams in hydrogeology, forestry, aquatic ecology, silviculture, and plantbased ecophysiology fields. These facilities are located on the 6th floor of the Carrefour du savoir.
  • Library: The library provides access to books, journals and other documents useful for coursework and research on the university’s campuses and service centres. Several resources are available directly online through its website, not to mention the personalized support available by email.
  • Cafeteria: Food services (bistro or cafeteria) are offered on some campuses. These places are often used for meetings and festivities and may allow groups of students to organize activities.

History

The University was founded in 1970 as "Services universitaires dans le Nord-Ouest québécois". The university was subsequently renamed "Direction des études universitaires dans l’Ouest québécois" (1972), "Centre d’études universitaires dans l’Ouest québécois" (1976), and "Centre d’études universitaires en Abitibi-Témiscamingue" (1981). The university has been known as Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue since 1983, when it split away from the administration of the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières.
