  • Classrooms: WALS (Western Active Learning Spaces) represent a range of active learning classrooms available at Western University. These classrooms are designed and equipped with tools that promote active and collaborative learning.
  • Library: Western University has multiple libraries, including the D.B. Weldon Library, its largest, as well as specialized libraries for law, business, and music. The university's library system, known as Western Libraries, has seven locations across the campus, which are open to students, faculty, and visitors. 
  • Laboratory: Western University has numerous laboratories across its campuses for both research and student services. These include specialized research facilities like the Biological Mass Spectrometry Lab, the Surface Science Western facility, and various engineering labs.
  • Research Center: Western is committed to nurturing a culture of research excellence and innovation. To build on the efforts of individual scholars, the university encourages the formation of collaborative research entities (groups, centres, institutes), both within and across traditional disciplinary boundaries. The goal is to support more complex models of research that aim to address a wide array of challenging topics of investigation.

  • Sports: Western University has a wide range of sports, including numerous varsity teams under the Western Mustangs program, as well as intramural and recreational options. The university offers a variety of athletic facilities and competitive teams in sports like football, basketball, and soccer, in addition to other activities like rowing, swimming, and badminton.
  • Gym: The fitness centre features Apex, Flex, Free Motion, Gravitron, Hammer Strength, Life Fitness, Polaris, Universal, Woodway equipment, and over 9000 lbs. of free weights. 
  • ICT: Western offers General Student Computing Labs, more commonly known as Genlabs, for the academic community.  These labs are installed and managed by Western Technology Services and are for general university instructional use. When the labs are not reserved for classes, they may be used by any Western student on a drop-in basis.
  • Cafeteria: Western has many places to relax and eat on campus. There are over 20 campus eateries including coffee shops featuring popular national brands.

History

The university was founded on 7 March 1878 by Bishop Isaac Hellmuth of the Anglican Diocese of Huron as The Western University of London, Ontario, and its first chancellor was Chief Justice Richard Martin Meredith. It incorporated Huron College, which had been founded in 1863.The first four faculties were Arts, Divinity, Law and Medicine (London Medical College).There were originally only 15 students when classes began in 1881.

Although the university was incorporated in 1878, it was not until 20 June 1881 that it received the right to confer degrees in arts, divinity and medicine. In 1882, the name of the university was revised to The Western University and College of London, Ontario.... read more

The first convocation of graduates was held on 27 April 1883. Initially affiliated with the Church of England, the university became non-denominational in 1908.
