    As dean, Bala secured the naming gift for the Cornell Bowers College, led a significant expansion of faculty to support the college’s rapid growth, and launched construction of a new 135,000-square-foot building designed to house robotics labs, experiential learning spaces, and faculty offices.     Prof. August is also a Presidential Advisor on Diversity and Equity (chairing a group of 3 PADEs), advising the President of the university and her cabinet, and the Provost’s council, on issues of diversity, equity and inclusion. Professor August joined the Department of Microbiology & Immunology at Cornell in 2010 as Professor of Immunology and Chair of the department. Professor August has taught and conducted research on topics related to immunology. His research addresses the mechanisms that regulate the development of inflammation in diseases such as allergy and lung inflammatory diseases, as well as development of T cell subsets and memory. He was previously appointed Vice Provost for Academic Affairs in 2018, and began his appointment as Deputy Provost in 2022.

The original set of nine bells first rings out at the university's opening ceremonies. Over time, the chimes have been recast and expanded to 21 bells. Presently three concerts are performed each day while classes are in session.
