International Applicants

  1. English Proficiency
    Applicants who have received degrees from non-U.S. accredited institutions in countries where English is not the primary/official language are required to demonstrate English proficiency. Applicants must submit scores on the TOEFL (or exams taken prior to January 21, 2026, overall score of 80 with at least 20 on speaking and writing; for exams taken on or after January 22, 2026: overall score of 4.5 with at least a 4 on speaking and writing) or IELTS (minimum overall band-width of 6.5, with no single band score below 6.0), or complete Level 6 of the UGA Intensive English Program.
    1. Applicants who have received degrees from accredited institutions in the US or from institutions in countries where English is the primary language are not required to submit the TOEFL or IELTS.
    2. Students who are currently enrolled and have been enrolled at least one year at a regionally accredited U.S. institution, may have the English language proficiency requirement waived if their work shows a strong quality of performance.
    3. Students who may seek a teaching assistantship while enrolled must follow the UGA TA Policy which has specific requirements for demonstrating English proficiency in order to be eligible to teach or assist with instruction. In addition, some graduate programs may require the TOEFL or IELTS regardless of previous educational experience.

    The deans of UGA’s 20 schools and colleges and the vice presidents for instruction, research, public service and outreach, and information technology report to Ayers. The vice provost for academic affairs, the vice provost for inclusive excellence and academic engagement, and the vice provost for graduate education and dean of the Graduate School also report to the provost, along with associate provosts for academic programs, faculty affairs, global engagement and the libraries.

    Prior to his appointment as provost, Ayers served as dean of the highly regarded Terry College of Business for 11 years.     Immediately prior to her role as Assistant to the President, Ms. Davis served as Operations Specialist in the President’s Office, providing day-to-day oversight of administrative staff operations, helping to coordinate the President’s SkySuite during football season, and serving as liaison for capital projects and related special events.

    Ms. Davis earned her bachelor’s degree in political science from Georgia Southern University in 1992 and her master’s degree in public administration from Jacksonville State University in 1993.

History

As the birthplace of public higher education in America, the University of Georgia has a rich history that spans more than 240 years. That history was steeped in tradition that has flourished and evolved over time. Now, UGA students participate in a diverse array of time-honored customs and even leave behind some traditions of their own.

1785

The state General Assembly incorporated the University of Georgia on Jan. 27, 1785. Georgia became the first to charter a state-supported university, and UGA became the birthplace of public higher education in America.

1786

s selected as the university’s first president. Baldwin, a native of Connecticut and a graduate of Yale University, was one of two Georgians to sign the U.S. Constitution in 1787.

1801

The university officially opened in 1801 when a committee of the board of trustees selected a land site. John Milledge, later a Georgia governor, purchased and gave to the board of trustees the chosen tract of 633 acres on the banks of the Oconee River in northeast Georgia. Josiah Meigs was named president of the university, and work began on the first building, initially called Franklin College, in honor of Benjamin Franklin. That building is now known as Old College. The university became known as Franklin College, a name that stuck for more than 50 years.

1804

The university graduated its first class in 1804.

1863

In 1863, the university closed its doors due to the Civil War. It didn’t reopen until 1866.

1872

In 1872, the university was designated as a land-grant institution under the 1862 Morrill Act.

1892

In 1892, chemistry professor and alumnus Charles Herty organized and coached UGA’s first intercollegiate football team.

1918

In 1918, UGA admitted women as students for the first time.

1931

In 1931, the General Assembly of Georgia placed all state-supported higher education institutions, including UGA, under the jurisdiction of a single board. This organization, known as the University System of Georgia, is governed by the board of regents.

1942

In 1942, UGA won its first footbal national championship , although the Georgia Bulldogs and the Ohio State Buckeyes both claimed titles this year.

1961

In 1961, Charlayne Hunter and Hamilton Holmes enrolled as the first African American students at UGA. Mary Frances Early soon joined them when she enrolled as the university’s first African American graduate student and became the first to receive a UGA degree. 1980

The Georgia Bulldogs completed a 12-0 season with a championship win over Notre Dame at the Sugar Bowl.

2022

On Jan. 10, the Georgia Bulldogs claimed their third football national championship, defeating the Alabama Crimson Tide 33-18.

2023

The Bulldogs claimed their fourth overall national championship, and second in as many years, when they flattened the TCU Horned Frogs 65-7 on Jan.
