Admission

Undergraduate Admission Requirement

  1. An application for admission.
  2. $50 application fee (nonrefundable). No application fee required for Idaho residents.
  3. Test scores. You may request copies of your ACT or SAT scores. If your ACT or SAT scores are on your school transcript, you do not need to have them sent separately. Every student who has a test score is encouraged to provide it for admission as well as class placement.
  • a.New first-year students will automatically be considered for admission if their cumulative unweighted GPA is 3.00 or higher. Test scores are not required.
  • Applicants who are Idaho residents achieving scores of 3 or higher on both the ISAT Math and Literacy tests are eligible for admission regardless of GPA.
  • New first-year applicants with a cumulative GPA between 2.60-2.99 must submit ACT or SAT test scores or opt-in to the Vandal Gateway Program.
  • Those who have cumulative GPAs of 2.30-2.59 will be admitted through the Vandal Gateway Program regardless of test scores. 

       4.Official high school transcript showing graduation date. If you have not yet graduated from high school, a transcript showing all             completed work may be accepted for early admission.

      5.Official transcripts from any colleges or universities attended.

      6.Valid government issued photo identification.

Academic requirements:

  • Combination of cumulative GPA and test scores.
  • Applicants with fewer than 14 transferable semester credits earned after high school graduation must also meet the admission requirements for new transfers.

If you do not meet the published criteria for admission at the time of review, you may apply to the Admissions Committee for consideration.

 

International Students:

First Year Student: A 2.5 grade-point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale is required from your secondary school. You must also meet criteria for admission to university-level study in your home country. The Admissions Office will convert grades/marks to a 4.0 U.S. scale.

Credentials eligible for transfer credit (first year and transfer students):

  • International Baccalaureate (IB)
  • General Certificate of Education – Advanced Level (GCE-A Level)
  • Global Assessment Certificate (GAC)
  • Advanced Placement (AP)
  • College-Level Examination Program (CLEP)

University of Idaho may also grant credit for courses completed at a college or university that is accredited or recognized by the appropriate educational authority in the country of study.

Language Requirements:

Submit one of the following as proof of English language proficiency:

  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
    • Test date is before Jan. 21, 2026: minimum score of 70
    • Test date is after Jan. 21, 2026: minimum score of 4.0
  • Completion of University of Idaho American Language and Culture Program (ALCP)
  • Duolingo English Test with a minimum score of 100
  • IELTS (International English Language Testing System) with a minimum score of 6.0
  • Pearson (PTE) Academic with a score of 48
  • SAT evidence-based reading and writing with a minimum score of 550
  • Completion from Lewis-Clark State College Institute of Intensive English Bridge Program
  • Spokane College of English Language (SCEL) with a pass of Level 140
  • ELS Language Centers Intensive English Program, Level 112
  • Cambridge C1 Advanced qualification with a pass
  • Cambridge C2 Proficiency qualification with a pass
  • Cambridge International “O” Levels with a pass

Language Proficiency Waiver:

English proficiency demonstration is waived for any applicant who has a previous degree at an accredited U.S. institution.

Postgraduate Admission Requirments

Entry requirements vary by degree. The graduate admission requirements below represent the criteria for entry into all graduate programs at U of I. Be sure to also review your degree-specific requirements and, if you are an international applicant, the additional international graduate requirements.

International Students:

  • Have earned or will have earned a bachelor's degree from a college or university accredited by a recognized accrediting body, a ministry of education or an official quality assurance organization. The bachelor's degree should be equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's degree consisting of four years of study (120 semester credit hours or 180 quarter hours).  
  • An official academic record from all post-secondary education institutions attended is required. This takes time so start this early in your application process.

C. Scott Green took office as the 19th president of the University of Idaho on July 1, 2019. President Green joins U of I as a highly accomplished executive with a career in global finance, operations and administration. d from Boise High School. Following his degree from the University of Idaho, the third-generation Vandal went to work for Boise Cascade Corporation. He went on to attend Harvard Business School and received a Master of Business Administration in 1989.

Green worked for Deloitte and Touche as part of its accelerated career program from 1989-1994. He then worked in banking, serving in various management roles for Goldman Sachs and ING Barings. He published two books on the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002, which reformed regulations around auditing and financial reporting.

    irection of all academic programs, endeavors, and instructional services on the Moscow campus as well as the university’s statewide academic, outreach and research initiatives. He leads the university’s strategic planning, accreditation development, and works alongside the other vice presidents and members of the administration to support U of I’s mission.

    Prior to his current role, he served as Vice Provost for Faculty at U of I for two years. In this role he managed faculty affairs for the institution by providing leadership in the areas of faculty hiring, mentoring, supervision, professional development and promotion. He was a liaison between the Provost’s Office and Faculty Senate, deans, associate deans, department chairs and other campus leaders. He regularly advised on policy issues, directed professional development for department/school administrators, oversaw new faculty orientation and worked to support other faculty initiatives.

History

On January 30, 1889, Governor Edward Stevenson of the Idaho Territory signed the territorial legislature's Council Bill No. 20, which officially established the UI as the upcoming state's land-grant institution. Nearly four years later, the university opened for classes on October 3, 1892. The choice of location for the University of Idaho was an "Olive Branch of Peace" by Gov. Stevenson for his actions in styming the nearly successful effort to detach the north Idaho Panhandle and join the state of Washington.
