Mission

Upon its founding in 1847, the University of Iowa was entrusted by the state legislature with a threefold mission of teaching, research, and public service. In pursuing that mission today, the university

If You Attended High School Outside the United States

You must meet the following requirements for admission:

  • A 3.0 grade point average (GPA) on academic courses (a U.S. grade of "B" or better where an "A" = 4.0).
  • Must present three years of completed secondary (high school) coursework.
  • Completion of secondary school (generally representing 12-13 years of education).
  • Upon completing secondary school, provide academic records (transcripts) that reflect a graduation date or a separate secondary school diploma/certificate.
  • Complete our Minimum High School Course Requirements, which vary depending on whether you are applying to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Engineering, Business, or Nursing.
  • Meet our English Proficiency Requirements

In addition:

  • If you are applying to the College of Nursing, see the additional International Nursing Requirements.
  • If you are applying to the Medical Laboratory Science program, see additional International Requirements
  • SAT or ACT scores are not required of international applicants who completed secondary school outside the United States; however, SAT or ACT scores are required of first-year applicants who wish to be considered for academic scholarships, Direct Admission to the Tippie College of Business, or for the University of Iowa Honors Program.
    • SAT and ACT scores can be used to satisfy the university’s English proficiency requirements.
    • The university encourages all applicants to take either exam, as strong results could favorably affect the decision regarding your application.

    Senior Vice President and University Architect Rod Lehnertz is the senior vice president for Finance and Operations at the University of Iowa, with responsibility for most non-academic operations of the university. Additionally, he represents the ... read more
    institution as its university architect.

    Prior to his senior vice president role, which began in 2014, Lehnertz was the director of Planning, Design and Construction in Facilities Management. His responsibilities included campus master planning, capital project management, and campus space management. He started at the University of Iowa in 1994 as an architect and project manager. As university architect, a primary task for Lehnertz was the recovery of the campus following the 2008 devastating $700M flood event. Due in large part to involvement associated with the transformation of the UI campus after the disaster, Lehnertz was named Iowa City’s 2013 Person of the Year by the Iowa City Press-Citizen. In 2006, Lehnertz co-authored The University of Iowa – Guide to Campus Architecture, a book celebrating the many notable building designs on the UI campus. A second edition, which included the campus emergence from the 2008 flood, was published in 2016.

History

The University of Iowa was founded on February 25, 1847, just 59 days after Iowa was admitted to the Union. The Constitution of the State of Iowa refers to a State University to be established in Iowa City “without branches at any other place.” The legal name of the university is the State University of Iowa (frequently abbreviated as SUI), but the Board of Regents approved using "The University of Iowa" for everyday usage in October 1964.
