In addition to meeting the academic entry requirements, applicants will be required to attend an interview with a panel that includes the Principal and Second Supervisors. References will also be obtained and verified before an offer is made.

Professor Cusack has been the recipient of several awards, including the Saltire Society’s Scottish Science Award and the Schlumberger Medal. In 2011, she was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (FRSE) and subsequently served a term as its Vice-President (Physical Sciences).
Before entering academia, she built a strong professional background in industry, holding management roles with multinational companies in both Ireland and the UK. She subsequently joined the University of Limerick, serving as Head of Department and later as Executive Dean before taking up the role of Dean of the Business School at Edinburgh Napier University.

Hugh joined Cork Institute of Technology in 2007 as Head of the Department of Biological Sciences and subsequently Head of School of Science and Informatics.
In 2018, he became Project Director of the merger that would create MTU. He served as Director of MTU’s Transformation Office when MTU was established on 1st January 2021.
Tim began his career as a Programme Manager at 3Com Technologies before advancing to the role of Business Process Transformation Manager at IBM. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce and a Master of Business in Supply Chain Management from UCD and was awarded a fellowship from EY Consulting.
During his career in Higher Education, Tim has overseen academic administration and student affairs, international student recruitment, strategy development, and complex change management programmes of work.
He holds a PhD and BEng in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from UCC, and a MEngSc in Mechanical and Process Engineering also from UCC. His research interests include cybersecurity, robotics, autonomous systems, sensing, and applied artificial intelligence with a strong focus on bridging academic innovation and industry application.
Dr McSweeney brings a strong track record of engaging with industry and is a board member of the Technology Industry Alliance.

In October 2021, MTU launched the Code Red Period Dignity campaign to provide free period products to staff and students. It was the first university in Ireland to provide such a service. The campaign also ran a series of events, talks and workshops to tackle taboos and misinformation around menstruation.
In February 2023, MTU was the target of a ransomware attack, which caused the cancellation of all classes in its Cork campuses for a period. The university attributed the attack to ‘Blackcat’, a Russian cybercrime group, having received a ransom note threatening to sell and or publish data if a "significant" sum was not paid. The closure, which MTU stated was intended to protect staff and student data and which did not affect the Kerry campuses, lasted for one week. MTU, which did not pay the ransom, later confirmed that some university data had been made available on the "dark web".
