The Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences, founded on January 1, 1995, is a dynamic and research-intensive state university. Located in the heart of the Rhineland, it offers around 9,000 students ideal opportunities for learning and research, supported by over 1,000 employees, including approximately 150 professors.
The university is spread across three campuses: Hennef, Rheinbach, and Sankt Augustin. In Bonn, it jointly operates the Bonn-Aachen International Center for Information Technology (b-it) with the University of Bonn and RWTH Aachen University. In its current university development plan (HEP3), H-BRS outlines its strategic goals for teaching, research, knowledge transfer, international relations, and sustainability, which it plans to achieve by 2025.

As a scientific institution, ZIEL promotes the further development and innovation of good teaching.
ZIEL supports teaching staff in the areas of higher education didactics, curriculum design, accreditation and evaluation through consultancy, training and other services.
ZIEL networks the actors in teaching and learning and implements various formats for exchange.
ZIEL conducts research on teaching and learning. It initiates and implements teaching-related projects for the further development of innovative teaching.
At Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences, students can expect a practice-oriented education based on current research findings in approximately 40 degree programs. In addition, there is a range of continuing education and certificate programs. Excellent technical infrastructure and well-equipped laboratories are standard features, as are numerous computer labs, university-wide Wi-Fi, a modern university and regional library, and a vibrant campus life.
As a university of applied sciences, H-BRS is heavily involved in practice-oriented research. A total of 17 research institutes cover a broad spectrum of topics, from detection technologies and genetics to sustainable development, resource conservation, security research, and visual computing. In addition, the university conducts extensive research in cooperation with regional and national businesses and has established the Center for Applied Research.
In June 2022, the university's executive board adopted a sustainability strategy. It encompasses the areas of research, teaching, knowledge transfer, governance, campus life, and digitalization. Goals include, for example, the removal of impervious surfaces on campus, the expansion of sustainability-oriented degree programs, and the exploration of new mobility and energy concepts. H-BRS's sustainability management supports the implementation of this strategy.
In view of the changing demands of the labour market, Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg intensively promotes study visits abroad. The summer schools, which are also supported by the university's development organisation, are attractive even for undergraduate students. In the winter semester 2023/24, over 18 per cent of foreign students are enrolled at the university. Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg cooperates with around 80 foreign universities in around 40 countries.

January 1995: Founding of the University.
The Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences was founded on January 1, 1995, by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia as the Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences. It is part of the "Agreement on Compensation Measures for the Bonn Region," which was concluded in 1994. Its specific mission: to promote structural change in the region, create new educational opportunities, and contribute to the structural development of the economic area through practical projects and collaborations with industry.
Spring 2005: Second Target Agreement Signed.
The update of the first target agreement, negotiated three years prior between the Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences and the Ministry of Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, confirms the university's current course of action, which aims to sharpen its profile. Furthermore, the agreement with the state provides a framework for further development. The university will apply for additional research priorities and competence platforms, as well as promote activities to attract students and internationalize its degree programs, particularly in Rheinbach.
March 2015: Founding of HAfM
The University Alliance for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (HAfM) is being founded in Berlin. Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences is one of the seven founding universities. The alliance is intended to form the basis for a structured, stable, and lasting partnership between universities of applied sciences and small and medium-sized enterprises.
March 2024: Library on the Rheinbach campus of H-BRS officially reopened
The university and district library on the Rheinbach campus has been reopened with a celebration. The premises had been closed to the public for almost four years – first due to the coronavirus pandemic, then because of flood damage in July 2021. The library has been redesigned, making it more attractive and modern.
January 2025: New study sees H-BRS still in first place in student satisfaction
Top ranking in overall student satisfaction: According to a recent study, the university achieved an average score of 3.2 points on a scale from zero (very dissatisfied) to four (very satisfied). The graduates surveyed for the study thus placed H-BRS in first place among all universities examined in North Rhine-Westphalia.
