With the political upheavals of the 1960s, demands for a reform of the education system grew louder, and so in 1968 the State Engineering School for Civil Engineering, the State Engineering School for Mechanical Engineering and the State Chemistry School were merged, followed in 1971 by the 'Law on Universities of Applied Sciences in the State of Hesse'.
40 Years – 40,000 Graduates:
Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences opened its doors in the winter semester of 1971/72. Nearly 2,500 students, including 600 first-year students, enrolled at this new Darmstadt institution, studying in eleven departments: Architecture, Civil Engineering, Chemical Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Plastics Engineering, Education, Social Pedagogy, Design, Mathematics/Natural Sciences/Data Processing, and Social and Cultural Sciences. In the following years, the growing influx of prospective students continued unabated and has remained remarkably consistent to this day. Ten years after its founding, the university had 4,000 students enrolled, and by its 40th anniversary in 2011/12, it had reached a new peak of well over 12,000 students. By then, the university had graduated over 40,000 highly qualified professionals with recognized degrees.
The campus is growing.
The enormous increase in student numbers throughout the university's history has repeatedly made spatial expansion essential. In 1985, a new lecture hall building with space for 350 students on an area of ??150 square meters was opened next to the Civil Engineering atrium. In 1986, the state approved an extension for the Design Department, and a year later, the Social Pedagogy Department celebrated the topping-out ceremony for its new building. The inauguration of a large complex for the Mechanical Engineering Department followed in 1989. A modern new building for the Computer Science Department was completed in 1991. By this time, the university had already increased its main usable area by a third to 30,000 square meters. In 1992, the university also succeeded in acquiring and converting the 10,000-square-meter Dugena complex on Haardtring. Today, this complex houses laboratories, offices, and classrooms for the Business and Civil Engineering Departments, as well as the Plastics Engineering program and the Research Administration. With the renovation of the largest h_da building – the high-rise – in the years 2009 to 2011, as well as the current construction of a new large lecture hall building and the planned construction of a new department building, both in the immediate vicinity of the high-rise, the university has succeeded in further expanding the central campus.
Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences Today:
As part of its modernization efforts and increasing internationalization, the university adopted a new name in 2006: Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences. This decision was part of a complex development process that involved restructuring the 15 departments and merging them into 11, streamlining and consolidating central facilities, and revising study and examination regulations. Today, Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences attracts a growing number of students to Darmstadt with its wide range of over 50 degree programs. With approximately 13,000 students in the 2012/13 winter semester, Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences consistently ranks among the five largest universities of applied sciences in Germany and offers excellent career prospects with its degrees.
